They sit in silence in the driveway of Cal’s towering future home for a few moments before Laina asks Cal to drive her back to her condo. She’s drained from the ordeal with Daisy as well as Cal’s suspicions, and doesn’t feel like she can be alone with all the jumbled thoughts cycling through her head. He takes immediate action, swapping his car with hers, telling her he’ll drive her home and then Uber back. She’s grateful for his effortless command of the situation; it allows her to sit quietly with her restless thoughts.

They park outside her condo, with the windows of her car rolled down, both of them silent and still, breathing in the smell of the sea. Overhead, scudding clouds play hide-and-seek with the moon and stars.

Laina feels tears threaten. Pushing back the torrent of emotions threatening to overwhelm her, she puts a hand on Cal’s arm. “Come inside with me,” she invites.

She climbs out of the car and strides toward the entrance of her condo without looking behind her to see if he’s followed. But she hears the slam of a car door and the beep of the automatic lock. She feels reckless, not an attitude Laina allows herself very often. Her life is controlled, planned, organized; that’s what makes it work. That’s what keeps her safe.

But tonight, she doesn’t care. When she pauses by her front door to insert her key, she feels Cal behind her, the warmth of his body, the electricity coming off his skin. She shifts her position slightly, “accidentally” backing her ass up into him, grazing what feels like a very promising erection. A low groan escapes Cal’s throat as she shifts away again.

Once they are inside, Cal takes her hand and the lead, kicking the door shut behind them. He kisses her, releasing her hand to cup her jaw between both of his palms, raining a shower of delicate kisses along her eyelids, the bridge of her nose. It’s Laina’s turn to moan. Cal’s hands move up and twist into Laina’s hair, their mouths find each other, their kisses become probing and deep. Their bodies press into each other, desperate with the need to merge.

Laina pulls Cal toward the bedroom, shedding her clothes as she goes, tugging at his, past caring about anything beyond her need to have this man inside her.

The sex is hungry but also languorous. Cal takes his time, making Laina slow her urgency with repeated soft kisses, capturing her hands, making her squirm. She thinks she will lose her mind as he explores her body. She urges him inside her and he resists, murmuring, “We have all the time we need.”

When they finally do come together, it’s fireworks and cartwheels. Mouths and hands and piercing thrusts. Cries and moans and muttered obscenities. Calls to god as if they are both praying. Maybe they are. The release when it comes is shattering. Laina pants, trying to regain her breath, struck by the moonlight reflecting off their intertwined bodies, hers so pale, his so dark.
